I dont usually do this but today I have been very saddened to hear about Robin Williams passing... Not just because he was such an amazing and talented entertainer, but because he saw no way out except to end his life. Theres many of us that Im sure have suffered depression in one way or another, but to be in that mind set that there is no other option, I just cant comprehend. Our society is so focused on looking good and eating healthy or following a particular diet, but what about a healthy mind? Depression is very real and very serious and perhaps its time we start looking at what really is healthy, not just physically but mentally as well. I try to do different posts about yoga and certain poses because it is my way of life and it has saved me. You are facing yourself every time you get on your mat. Your fears, your ups and downs in life, mourning of loved ones or losses of relationships etc. It teaches you how to connect the mind and the body and in turn you learn how to deal with situations as they arise, from a reactive to responsive, from hating to loving and acknowledging everyone is different and everyone is fighting their own battles. I can see yoga is also being highly promoted in a physical sense by the postures, but if thats what it takes to get people interested and on the mat, then maybe its working because naturally in time, you want to learn more about the other aspects to it. I think as a society we need to stop obsessing about the medial things, and start looking at it as a whole. A healthy mind IS a healthy body. And there are amazing options out there like the Mindful Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course that may assist. But its not just about you either. If you know someone that needs your love and support, be there for them because it takes time and they may simply just need to know you are there for them and that you love them xx
