I dont usually start posts in this group but it is late at night and the cogs are spinning as I work out/ Train. This post is mainly for the UP n Coming players but vets, you may learn something or have something re-put into perspective for you. MINDSET. IS. EVERYTHING. I know that sounds dumb. What about tech skill... what about MU knowledge?! What about ledge guarding etc... etc... etc... ALL of those things are important but the FIRST thing that you need in order to be a great player is a positive, focused mindset that REFUSES to make excuses . Why do I say this? Because I realized as I train, that MY mindset has changed ALOT since I first debuted at Iab7 in May of this year. I have always been extremely driven and trained long and hard, but upon reflection, I realized that up until....... like YESTERDAY..... I made excuses for myself. WHAT?!?! RUIN making excuses?!? What are you talking about bro?!? Let me explain.. As some of you know, I main King Lucas.... i.e... the Hero that project M needs. If you were in the group that knew this, then you probably also know that Lucas has quite a few tools at his disposal and in the hands of a great player comes across as extremely overpowered. What you may not know is that, he is literally THE PERFECT COMBO WEIGHT FOR EVERY OPPONENT IN THE CAST. How is that possible?!?! I legitimately dont know... but it is stupid easy to combo Lucas. If you touch him, he dies.... because he just sits there, waiting patiently in endless hitstun, BEGGING to be combod. THAT BEING SAID.... there have been sooooo many times during this learning process that I have gotten unbelievably frustrated with LUCAS, rather than at myself. I know that sounds funny, but I am being dead serious.... I would get so annoyed that he has to get within arms length of his opponents to do any real damage, and would get so annoyed that any time I took a hit, it lead into another and another and another and then death. But what I failed to realize until recently, was that it is not the character holding me back, it was ME and my mindset holding him back. Of course we all know the expression Dont get grabbed which to me (having missed that melee era) means, dont let yourself get punished, but we all know that this is not something that any player is capable of achieving in a match unless you main Mewtwo. So YOU have to figure out EXACTLY what it is your character is amazing at and what areas they lack in, then play to their strengths and defend their weaknesses. Yeah yeah... we all know that..... tell me something thats not self explanatory I dont know if you REALLY understand what I am getting at, though. Many characters in this game have tough matchups and players opt to pick secondaries to give themselves better chances of victory WHICH IS FINE. The only problem with that is there is a certain mindset that we up n comers frequently, without recognizing it, commit to when we hear oh thats a bad MU or that MU is in this characters favor. Think about it: we automatically assume it is UNWINNABLE and when we lose, if we lose, we ALWAYS fall back on the: Oh well I mean.... I was playing against Oracle or Dakpo or Dude that MU is 70/30 in Foxs favor or Disjoints are my weakness or He has an infinite against me or, in my case, Lucas gets bodied by everybody... but..... UNFAVORABLE does not mean UNWINNABLE and you are, without realizing it, developing a mindset that will very probably either prevent you from becoming, or slow you down in your effort to become great. YOU DONT NEED TO find a new character when you lose. YOU DONT needs to rage about how PM is broken. YOU DONT NEED TO complain about the stage-list or how NOBODY was rooting for you or how that MU is TERRIBLE. YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT.... you lost because IN THAT MOMENT, your opponent was a better player than you, and utilized his characters move-set in a way that was effective NOT AGAINST YOUR CHARACTERS move-set, but against the WAY that YOU chose to use your characters move-set. REALIZE THAT: The character does not move itself and it does not just string together the most ideal set of moves that lead to death. RECOGNIZE THAT: LUCAS did not let himself get driven into a corner or hit by Roys D-tilt which started a horrible combo..... YOU put your character there. YOU let your opponent approach. YOU went into shield or rolled when you should have resisted the urge and just..... idk.... JUMPED or put your opponent in that terrible situation. TOO often we say Diddy or Mewtwo or Lucas etc... is broken without realizing that there is a master behind that character, because it is so much easier to make an excuse than to admit that YOU were the one who let it happen. Now I am not saying that PM is perfect and I am not saying that you shouldnt counter-pick or that some things are a little silly, but what I am saying is that: The SOONER WE realize that our characters get combod to Infinity and Beyond, the sooner WE realize that WE make all the choices in a battle, not our characters, the sooner WE realize that unfavorable does not mean unwinnable, and the sooner WE STOP MAKING EXCUSES for our defeats, the sooner WE will achieve our goals in Smash and in all facets of our lives. WE are the next generation of greats. . . Our DESTINY ......awaits - RUIN
