I dont want to thread-jack anyone, but I see a lot of people - TopicsExpress

I dont want to thread-jack anyone, but I see a lot of people asking about getting rid of Roi. I used to donate mine to the ciguatera project but it is a lot of work to freeze them and turn them in. I know some guys take them for fertilizer, but the more Ive thought about it the more I think they should be left in the water. The coral reef is a system. All of the energy, and molecules that went into making that Roi came from the prey it consumed on the reef. As we know from stomach contents, almost anything is fair game. Basically when we kill a bunch of Roi we are removing that energy from the reef. If the dead fish were left in the water they could feed eels and sharks, which might mean some other fish survives. Or shrimp, crab, and lobsters might eat them. I know some guys think we would be added cig back into the system, but as long as you dont chop them up they would primarily be consumed by large predators or scavengers. Im curious what other people think about this, I know I have hauled my fair share of them out of the ocean, just wondering if that was the right thing to do?
