I don’t know why this memory popped into my head last night... old age I guess, but This Is A No $hitter! Back in the mid 50s I was in USS Grampus (SS523) out of Norfolk, and we had one JG in the wardroom who was a real flake. When he had the mid watch as OOD, and wanted coffee, it had to be wardroom coffee in a wardroom cup, and he wanted a full cup. This meant waking the duty steward, a young Filipino whose name, I think, was Eusibio. I had the helm watch at the bottom of the ladder to the bridge when Eusibio came up from control, paused and emptied his mouth into the cup. He waited a few seconds, hollered “coffee up”, took a mouthful again and climbed up the ladder to the bridge, pausing at the top to refill the cup. The QM, radar operator & I cracked up! I’m sure the story got around to the other boats in Squadron Six, and wonder if anyone heard of similar happenings on their boat? That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
