I doubt Id be any good as a political advisor to anyone... but still, if I had to give advice to Obama right now, Id say: talk in churches, talk about Jesus, talk about the Bible. Keep repeating I was a stranger and you took Me in... Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me (Matthew 25:35). Cite the many Old Testament verses about how we must be just to the foreigner, the widow, and the orphan. Go to churches on Sundays, give brief speeches on immigration, packed with Bible quotations and ask for their support and their prayers, not for you, but for the millions of families threatened with forcible separation if your policies are revoked. Court the Vatican and the Catholic bishops, try to get favorable statements, and exhortations to the Catholic faithful. Ask forgiveness, in religious language, for the deportations youve perpetrated before, for waiting so long and missing so many opportunities. Give a commencement address at Notre Dame. Press the moral issue, and the procedural objections will seem petty and pedantic.
