“I doubt there is a person in New Zealand who hasn’t been touched in some way by the tragic passing of Robin Williams. This is a harsh reminder to all of us, that even those who seem happiest in public can be suffering a desperate sadness in private. Everyone gets a little down sometimes; that’s normal. It’s when “sometimes” becomes everyday, that help needs to be sought. And there is help out there, both for the individual and for families affected by this illness. A good place to start is depression.org.nz but if you, or anyone you know just wants someone to talk to, please do pop in for a chat. I’m not a mental health professional, but I hope that I can provide a caring, empathetic ear if anyone needs to talk. And be vigilant folks. We get so busy with our everyday lives, that sometimes we don’t notice the subtle changes in our friends and family around us. Give your loved ones a hug today and just ask them, “are you OK?” In the meantime, I will leave you with my favourite Robin Williams moment which is a quote from Good Will Hunting. You only feel loss when you loose someone, if you love them more than you love yourself.
