I drove out into the slightly chilly Autumnal night just now and saw, as I rolled over a tree-enshrouded bridge, the harvest moon hanging jaundiced yellow straight in-front of me, shocking and grotesquely huge, leering and eyeless. It hung low as a noose, almost brushing the dark road before me, haunted and heraldic of everything that must die once again as Autumn rises ascendant, overtaking the capricious swell of Summer to swallow up light, color and warmth. Such a strange and exciting time of change, the last droplets of wine, time falling away, the first blush of hibernation, leaves curling delicately in on themselves as fingers bend towards the palm. I was listening to this song over and over and so perhaps it informed my perception of the moon as portentous, but it was stunningly gorgeous. Stranger Than Kindness is easily my favorite off of a great album, perhaps his best. Its the perfect soundtrack for a certain period of personal dissolution and distraction leading towards my last slightly charred years in DC. Maybe the music just made me high.
