I eat meat. But, I rescue bunnies. People often ask me to explain why bunnies are different than any other livestock. Rabbits are the third most popular companion animal, right after cats and dogs. Because they can be easily, and quickly, bred, they are treated as disposable, and easily replaceable. Gestation for a pregnant doe is 30 DAYS. She can have between 4 and 12 kits. They will be full grown and capable of reproducing in 12 weeks. At this time, they are either bred to create more babies, or they are slaughtered for meat. TWELVE WEEKS. Thats the entire lifespan of that meat Whole Foods is selling. Their natural lifespan is over 10 years, and often as much as 15. They are intelligent, sociable, have complex social structures which openly accept humans, cats, dogs, possums, squirrels, birds, etc. as part of their natural environment that they will interact and play with, as well as showing concern if another isnt well. They form long lasting emotional bonds (including holding grudges against those that offend it.) They are truly communal animals. This is a natural prey animal. I accept that they feed a lot of other animals on the food chain. I also accept that people will always eat rabbit. I have also eaten rabbit on several occasions. But, I cannot, and will not, accept the latest foodie trend of this lean meat, thats becoming all the rage, and is the reason Whole Foods is all over it. They are pushing the rabbit as healthy meat, agenda, way beyond normal food trends. Theyre inventing a whole new market to profit off of suffering of these animals. That sucks. Please join with me and refrain from purchasing Whole Foods rabbit meat. Theyve got it rough enough. Lets not support an increase in demand. Thanks for reading.
