I embrace the New Year with these thoughts which I consider to be truths - Justice is a farce, if only for a few. Laws are unwelcome, if uneven. Integrity is but a mask, if absent when alone. Honesty is deceit, if with a hidden purpose. Greatness is undeserved, if accidental; it is best an effect, and not a goal. Popularity is infamy, if fraught with fraud; pointless, if not for character. Heroism is a sham, if without humility. Piety is pretense, if publicized. Charity is vanity, if proclaimed. Benevolence is pride disguised, if selective, scheduled. Compassion is without consequence, if contrived. Mercy is meaningless, if without remorse, repentance. Humility is unreal, if shown for fame. Wisdom is a waste, if not willingly shared. Scholarship is sheer pedantry, if profuse. Leadership is recklessness, if without foresight, vision; It is despotism, if without unselfish service and accountability. Patience is unreal, if from indifference. Respect is without meaning, if only from the ignorant. Honor is shame, if undeserved. Fidelity is a fraud, if not full and forever. Loyalty is unneeded, if not absolute. Passion is purposeless, if not pursued. Gratitude is rudeness, if unexpressed. Courage does not count, if not till the end. Restraint is regret, if from cowardice. Chivalry is sheer drama, if tainted with design. Perseverance is without purpose, if toward but futility. Simplicity is grotesque, if without meaningful purpose. Diligence without discipline is but a spark, and not a flame. Probity is carelessness, if incomplete. Competence is chicanery, if without caution. Independence is bondage, if irresponsible. Liberty is mere license, to the unworthy. Frugality is foolishness, if an end in itself. Wealth is impoverishment, if built from the misery of others. Beauty is best, if sensed even by the blind. Love is untrue, if with expectations.
