I ended my ‘Ports of Opportunity’ tour by visiting Metal Shark Boats in Jeanerette that produces the boats the U.S. Coast Guard uses for search and rescue missions and to keep our ports secure. Earlier this year, I successfully urged the Coast Guard to speed up its order of boats to keep the 200 shipbuilders at Metal Shark fully employed. I also added an additional $2.7 million to the Homeland Security Appropriations bill for FY15 for the Coast Guard to purchase eight more boats in addition to the 30 it originally budgeted to purchase in FY15, bringing the total to 38 boats to meet the Coast Guard’s needs.
