I ended up in the local ER for 3 to 4 hrs today because of pain and swelling of my right thumb & wrist. The diagnosis is DE QUERVAIN TENOSYNOVITIS. An inflammation of tendons and synovium on the thumb side of the wrist. Tendons are fibers that attach muscle to bone. Synovium is a slick membrane that helps tendons move. Repetitive movements can irritate and inflame these tissues. The result is pain when you touch or grasp objects, turn or twist your wrist. You may also have swelling near the base of the thumb. Treatment will depend on how bad the pain is. Often it can be treated with medications and home care. If your case is severe, you may be referred to a specialist to discuss the option of surgery.
