I enjoy the friendly competition of a good greasy pole contest, - TopicsExpress

I enjoy the friendly competition of a good greasy pole contest, soccer match, bike race, or other athletic event. However, I feel strongly that competition is toxic to academics. Every class I have ever taught learns the most when encouraged to learn from everyone and everything: Each other, including those with unique learning styles, teachers, birds, ants, water, lights, bystanders, books, and spontaneous spark. Competition encourages narrow focus, and specifically discourages learning from one another. We cannot teach collaborative learning and competition at the same time. I pledge in all my teaching to erode competition away from academics and bring in wide angle learning.
