I enjoyed a wonderful Sunday morning in Cebu City today. I visited the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral where a mass was underway and the very interesting Cathedral Museum next door. Construction of the Cathedral was started in 1689. Quite a few times construction was halted and resumed. Apparently it took centuries to finish the cathedral which was then totally destroyed during a bombing raid by the US Airforce in September 1944. After the war reconstruction started. I found several nice old pictures of the cathedral but don’t know when they were made. The Cathedral Museum was opened in 2006 and contains an interesting collection of artefacts and documents, mostly from Spanish colonial times. The building itself is magnificent and dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The walls of the ground floor are coral stone, the first floor is all wood. It was first the parish convent of the Cathedral and had several different functions afterwards. The building survived World War Two. It is not allowed to take pictures in the building but it is in the garden. My knowledgeable guide Gerard showed me old bells as well as a Mercedes Benz vehicle which was used during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Cebu on February 19, 1981. Interesting stuff! You learn every day. Cebu City has many interesting sights. #philippines #cebu #cebucity #authenticphilippines #visayas #authenticphilippinestravel #philippinen
