I enjoyed the first episode of Cosmos but was unnerved at the segment of Giordano Bruno. Not because Im denying the close mindedness of the Catholic Church, because that would be dumb. It happened. Nor was it because I think religion and science are diametrically opposing forces (theyre not). The original Cosmos was a series that looked at the Earth and it relatively small role in the greater universe (among other scientific issues). Carl Sagan was very staunchly of the mind that if humanity realized how small and insignificant it was that maybe we would use our time more wisely and less violently. With that in mind, I thought the inclusion of Brunos life put human history on an equal footing with the scale of the rest of the universe which I thought was inappropriate. Knowing that Seth MacFarlane is a staunch atheist, I thought he had that included in there as a way to rile conservative viewers. However, this is a really good article that made me feel a little better about that segments inclusion. I still think it wasnt handled in the best way (that really terrible animation did not help) but Im looking forward to the rest of the series.
