I feel ashamed as a student and as a Calcuttan as I put up this status. It is with respect to the incident at one of Indias premiere institutions, Jadavpur University. 36 people HOSPITALIZED. 1 in ventilator. 41 people ARRESTED. Charges? None. Innumerable INJURED. Disturbing numbers? No, its not the numbers of a riot. Its the number of students. Like any one of us. The reason? On August 28 a girl was forcibly dragged into the boys hostel by as many as 10 boys and allegedly molested. Following this horrific incident the brave girl(I hate to call her the victim) lodged a complaint with the authorities. The University set up a committee to probe the matter. NO ARRESTS have been made so far. Hundreds of students of the University were thrashed bloody by the Police and the Rapid Action Force (who were reportedly called in by the VC himself) when they staged a peaceful protest against the lackadaisical pace of investigation and demanded changes in the committee. Also present among the attackers were plain clothes goondas. Identities unknown. They manhandled students and allegedly MOLESTED scores of female protesters.
