I feel badly that I havent updated the progress of my former husband, Craig Sager. Exactly 6 months ago today is when we learned of his illness and diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The kids and I have gotten quite a few inquiries as to how he is doing, especially with MLB playoffs going on and NBA just around the corner. We were so fortunate our son, Craig Sager, II was a perfect match to donate his bone marrow. On July 3, he had surgery to extract 1 1/2 liters of liquid marrow to donate to his dad. Remarkably, they were both sent home that night. The younger Craig had to go through follow up appointments from the procedure but was back to normal in no time. Usually, no news is good news but that hasnt always been the case. While Craig, Sr. started producing healthy white blood cells in the time frame expected, he has also had complications along the way. On July 20, he was admitted to the hospital with C-diff, gout, high fever and pneumonia. All painful and uncomfortable conditions. Thankfully, the doctors were able to address the C-diff and gout but the pneumonia is still lingering. His condition was too compromised to do procedures to biopsy the specific kind that he had so he has been on a host of antibiotics and other medicines to treat him and his weakened immune system. Craig was in the hospital for 3 weeks and still has to return almost daily for lengthy treatments, tests and procedures. He has also lost 35 pounds. Saturday the 11th marked Day 100 since the transplant, which is a significant milestone. It appears he has finally turned a corner! His pneumonia/fungus ball is dissipating and just traces of it remains. The marrow is 100% transferred over to what came from our son and it shows no signs of leukemia cells. The doctors gave him the weekend off from treatments and he is feeling a lot better. I wont even try to venture a guess as to when hell be back on the sidelines as Im sure the doctors will be protective of his fragile state and wait until hes completely good to go. Slow and steady, wins the race. Thank you for your concern and good wishes!
