I feel it is necessary to clarify something very important. When I argue my points, I always just say DNR. Some people take that as I am blaming everybody in the DNR for mismanaging our deer herd. That is absolutely not true. First off, our district biologists can only due so much, being that they are strung out with so many counties because the state is not replacing retired biologists. Instead, they are spreading the work load out to current biologists making their jobs even harder. I most certainly place no blame on our Conservation Officers. They put their lives on the line every day, and being that this country has people wanting to wage war on law enforcement, the fact that our C.O.s are still out there doing their job is truly heroic and demands the utmost respect. Their job is to carry out the laws that are handed down to them, and they in no way control any management decisions, all they can do in that aspect is relay information from hunters on up to our district biologists. Obviously, I was not, and am not a fan of Chad Stewarts management ideas. I spoke with him two years ago about this issue. It took multiple voice mails, and emails, to even get a response from him, and when we did speak verbally, he treated me with little respect, as if my questions were simply just taking away from his precious time. He never gave me any answers, other than what he had already wrote in the regs. manual. Obviously, Director Clark of the DNR is obtuse, passing off letters with questions and concerns to his secretary. Ultimately, the only way anything is going to change is through our state legislature, and that is why I have been pounding the issue of writing your elected state representative if you agree with my assertions, and you too, are concerned. This is our only chance at making change. Remember, in any communication you make with either an elected state rep. or a person in the DNR, be respectful and polite, but make your concerns clear. And once again, thank you to all the conservation officers in Indiana for what you do every day.
