I feel like I have heard this claim dozens of times in lots of contexts: For the first time in 200 years, the current generation of children are expected to live shorter lives than their parents. It didnt seem out of the question, but Im not sure if I totally bought it either. In this case, the claim is made in the movie Fed Up. I havent seen it, but I found this commentary to be pretty interesting. According to the data these folks got from the CDC and the National Census Bureau, there is no current projection indicating that future life expectancy will be lower than it is now. I really wonder where that idea got its start. Though it may be like the you only use 10% of your brain myth, in that it has no concrete origin.
