I feel like a lot of the folks that are excited about the earth-like planet, that Kepler discovered, because they think/hope that might mean that our species has an out. Perhaps they think that we might get a second chance, after how badly weve treated our own world? Maybe we could relocate to this new Earth, right? WRONG. The new world is 500 light years away, so that would mean (at our current speed of space travel) the mission to this new planet would take 18,628,240.24 years. You read that right, 18 MILLION years. To put that in perspective, that is roughly 91x the length of time that humans have even existed as a species. If we set off on a mission, on a ship large enough to encapsulate a closed eco-system, we would evolve into new species hundreds of times over, by the time we arrived to this new system. I think its super amazing that our technology has given us the ability to study so deep into the vastness of our universe. I just hope we dont forget that we are currently, (and likely forever,) stuck with the world weve already got. Dont lose sight of our responsibility to this planet.
