I feel that the real danger of these unpunished police killings is a society in which police and the public are at ends with each other. In my own personal dealings with police officers Ive found that many are a bit badge heavy, but even still, the vast majority of them truly do want to serve and protect. Most young children who dream of becoming cops do so because they want to make the world a safer place to live. The above is not to dismiss the recent killings that have come to media attention. I expect my law enforcment officers to be held to a higher code of conduct, even in cases where self defense is an issue. I expect a trained member of law enforcement to be able to subdue an attacker without firing 12 shots, or choking him to death. And I believe that MOST of our law enforcement officers believe the same. We need to come together, white and black, poor and rich, officer and civilian, and see justice brought to the world of law enforcement. Because so long as a badge equals a license to kill, I fear that our streets will be a danger zone for all of us.
