I felt compelled to share this story. Meet Slimer. Last Saturday I was walking with Ollie down Oaks Bottom Wildlife Reserve and came across this bird (Varied Thrush) which had a broken wing. It was unable to fly let alone move very well. I couldnt just leave the bird in its vulnerable state with our recent cold weather. I did some research and found out about the Audubon Society. A few calls later, and a twenty minute walk back home with the bird in my hat and gloves, I got a ride to the treatment center and was able to hand over the injured bird. The volunteers that took in the bird seemed very knowledgeable about wild birds and how to move ahead with care. I left. Today I called back and was informed that the bird had died the next day. I explained some of the behavior and was informed that the bird most likely hit a hard object, broke its wing and had very bad neurological damage. It was sad, yet bitter sweet. The bird spent its last moments warm and cared for instead of being left in the cold and prolonging its demise. I gave it one last chance to pull through. Everything deserves a second chance.
