I felt this story represents such a significant victory for conservation of the species who inhabit our oceans, and for the conservation of the oceans themselves, that it deserves an additional post. Some of you may have heard of Captain Paul Watson, a controversial activist who, along with many courageous crew members, have risked life and limb for years harassing the Japanese whaling fleet over this very issue. Watson always insisted that the Japanese were lying when they insisted they were doing research. In fact, argued Watson and many others, they were engaging in commercial whaling, slaughtering so many of these magnificent animals for products that are really no longer needed. Well, I imagine Watson and all the brave men and women who have gone to battle with him (these gripping battles have been captured over several seasons in Whale Wars on Animal Planet), are feeling vindicated today! Every now and then, I guess the truth still wins the day. This renews my flagging faith that change is possible-at least a little bit! Japanese whaling has been deemed unscientific and was ordered to halt by the UN’s International Court of Justice on Monday, marking a significant victory for animal rights campaigners. The court ruled that Japan failed to justify the large number of minke whales it hunts in the Antarctic. (TheDodo)
