I fight for Pontiac. Some people live in places like Independence Township or Waterford or Auburn Hills, or Bloomfield etc. and see no reason to fight for Pontiac. Its funny because you see people from those areas claiming Detroit all the time. I get it. My great grandmother moved to Detroit 95 years ago and we still own the property she bough way back then. However, when I moved to MI from WI I moved to Independence Township. If you know your history you know that most of northern Oakland County (where independence township is) was Pontiac before the federal government forced the integration of the schools and public facilities. They dont teach you about the bombs, bullets, and other violence that were used by community members as they raged against systematic racial integration. They certainly dont teach you that the only reason these cities exist is because of white flight which was the last resort after they committed violence and murder they decided to leave. I dont know if they are even still alive and I dont care. What I do know is if we want to reverse the hate and fix the damage that was done we will have to face the facts of our past and bring this fractured community back together. Some people want to leave the past in the past. They thing that they can just move forward with no knowledge of why things are the way they are. Dont trust or listen to them. They are either stupid or trying to undermine the efforts of good people. Heres a tip of a person is not involved in the community, trying to do positive things, their opinion about the community means nothing. Concentrating on you family alone means nothing. If you have no love for all people youre still a selfish fool who is rearing selfish and foolish offspring. When I was in high school a lot of kids in Clarkston called Pontiac, Ponti-crack. It used to piss me off because 40 years earlier their address would have been a Pontiac address. They werent even conscious of how racist they were being. That is the hate and hurt I speak of. It is now 3 generations deep. To those outside of Pontiac it is subconscious. They act as if there was always a Waterford or Auburn Hills or Independence Township. We can change this! We can make all people matter. We can economically and socially turn around Pontiac and make it prosperous again. Detroit has 750,000 people and centuries of corruption that has led to decay. It will take a decade at least for real change to take effect there. Pontiac has 60,000 people. We can change it today. If we did Oakland county would be the richest county in the nation for decades to come. But wtf do I know.
