I finally finished making a special chart to hang on my wall. A large piece of graph paper divided into tiny blocks: 52 blocks wide, 80 blocks tall. My birth date is written on the top left corner. The same date, 80 years later, is on the bottom right of the page. With every week that passes, I take a pen and fill in a block. April 24th of this year I will finish my 24th row. 24 years on this earth. All the weeks I have lived are in black. All the weeks I hope to live are blank. Every time I look at this, I remember that I am going to die. This chart is a constant reminder of my own mortality. Every day, I feel a little fear as I wake up. This isnt meant to be macabre or scary. I embrace the concept of my own existence and the limited time I have to make an impact on the world. Acceptance of your inevitable departure is good to remember. It allows you to constantly strive to prove the worth of your own existence. It drives you to move beyond what you think should be humanly possible. It motivates me to live an incredible life. Make your existence count. No one lives forever.
