I finally found my great grandparents 1900 census living in NYC at - TopicsExpress

I finally found my great grandparents 1900 census living in NYC at 235 Cherry St. It was a tricky one since Shalom became Solomon before settling on Samuel MILLER. His wifes name ran a similar course from Bashe to Bertha finally to Rebecca. Rebecca Altman Millers family is almost a complete mystery. Their 1899 ship manifest had her cousin Abram ALTMAN as sponsor yet the manifests address for Abram of 58 Monroe St. turned up no leads on the 1900 census as he had moved on and no other family names are recognizable to me out of the many families at that address. I believe Ive figured out the Abram Altman who was the cousin through procees of elimination (ship records from Abram Altmans living in Minsk gubernia) but he died in 1903 in NYC and the trail ends there. His widow Sarah Altman I find on a 1920 census living at 274 Cherry St. but Im not positive it is her. On the 1900 census below at 235 Cherry Street Solomon, Bertha and their two young girls are listed as boarders presumably of Louis RAPPAPORT and family. Both the Rappaports and Reubun family listed below them are quite elusive. I cant find any records on any of them to determine whether or not they were related in some way to my great grandparents. Checking the 1905 census none of them are living at that address though there is a different Rappaport family there, perhaps a younger brother of Louis. Im trying to learn more about my great grandparents relatives but so far no leads. So far all attempts at research in and around Minsk have been fruitless and Im working with the best researcher there so my focus now turns to their early years in NYC before they moved to Brockton MA in 1902 or so. Any ideas for further research in NYC? Landsmanshaftn, synagogue records, immigrant aid etc? My great grandparents apparently had $1 to their name entering the US in 1899 as listed on their ship manifest. I was under the impression that families were turned away at Ellis Island carrying that little money but maybe that was in later years when that was enacted. Thanks for any help or ideas.
