I finally took time out today to photograph the Cube (AKA the Cheese Grater), an outdoor stage in Winnipeg’s Exchange District that boasts the city’s most interesting historical architecture. To my delight, an artist was planning her show and not only was it open, but I was allowed in to photograph it! April 24, 2014, the creators of the Cube, the Winnipeg firm 5468796 Architecture co-founders Sasa Radulovic and Johanna Hurme received an award from the Canada Council for the Arts and Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, becoming one of 12 winners of the 2014 Governor Generals medal for architecture. The City of Winnipeg and the Exchange District Business Improvement Zone commissioned the structure whose stage is used by musicians and artists during the course of festivals. Here is a short video if you want to hear the architects explain why they built it this way. winnipegfreepress/multimedia/video/arts-life/the-cube-in-old-market-square-96358009.html (there is a short commercial that you will have to endure)
