I finally watched video footage of Ray Rice battering his girlfriend on YouTube. The video shows him spitting on her, her batting at his face, and him punching in her the head; she immediately falls to the ground and is unconscious for what feels like several minutes. More disturbing than the video footage are the comments. I cried as I read them – many men and women seem to think that Janay “got what she deserved”. Another comment read: “this is what equality looks like”. Has our society become so fueled by rage? Has the oppression of this mentality become so heavy that we as women are beginning to perpetuate it on ourselves? I am interested in how we as a network can be utilized to change the underlying problems in this is issue - and how as women we can EMPOWER one another. I am sad that as a woman my abilities are questioned. I am not heard. My voice isnt as important as a man voice. I dont want to talk about #whyistayed. I want to find out #howweallcanhelp. I want to find out what we have to do to raise our voices together, men & women - to respect one another.
