I find I care less and less about specific policies as such (what the marginal tax rate should be), but am very concerned that we are tossing away our legacy of commitment to the rights of the individual, the family and the community in favor of swallowing everyone up into Rousseaus general will. Even in casual conversation -- like FB posts-- I see an acceptance of tyranny of the majority and a cavalier attitude about things like seizing private property and squelching conscience claims -- as long as we agree with the people doing the squelching. We dont We as a people, I am gathering from what I see in commentary Left & Right, increasingly think people who disagree with us have no rights were obliged to defend and that freaks me out. You know what you never hear anyone say anymore --and it used to be so common?-- Its a free country. Used to mean, not my thing, but they can if they want. Now, no matter how small the practice, you are likely to be treated to a school-marmish lecture about why you shouldnt be doing that. And even our national aspirations are so small. We used to be interested in securing liberty for all. Now we just want smart phones and insurance plans - Rebecca Ryskind Teti
