I find it interesting that when the US military had a large involvement in Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Viet Nam...), heroine use was rampant in the states (answers some questions regarding why the US was giving Pol Pot money). When there were incursions in South and Central America, cocaine and its derivatives flooded our country. Currently, the government has regained interest in Asia and heroine use is on the rise again. Local law enforcement agencies are incarcerating drug users in record numbers - in fact, the USA is number one regarding per capita inmates. While the government has acknowledged the link between the CIA and cocaine smuggling, I encourage YOU to do a search for governmental heroin trafficking. Now try to sleep well. ;-)
