I find it ridiculous when people complain that the University of the Philippines only caters to the elite -- simply because it was *meant* to cater to the academic elite. Its meant to be the premiere state university, NOT *the* state university for the masses. If they clamor for accessibility to affordable state-funded education -- thats what the Polytechnic University of the Philippines provides. I have met (and referred/hired -- for my various employers) excellent graduates from PUP, which makes me believe that the quality of education there is punching above its weight. That being said, Im all for increasing state funding for these institutions as well as the various other state colleges and universities around the country. Being able to go on talks and seminars for those institutions made me aware of the sorry state of the facilities of some of these colleges. This is a better cause to advocate, and clearly more important than fixating on UPs accessibility.
