I find it worrying that some speakers at the Forum on CPF and Retirement Adequacy today said that Singaporeans should not overconsume and should spend within our means. I think the government has to understand things from the ground. The reality is that with the most expensive housing prices in the world, the poorest 30% simply do not have enough to use and two-thirds of middle income Singaporeans have barely enough to use. It is not that Singaporeans want to overconsume or spend beyond our means. We are paid too low wages, and have to pay for basic essentials, such as housing, telecommunications, transport and public untitled, owned by the government, which prices have escalated too quickly for Singaporeans to catch up. If Singaporeans can spend within our means, we will very gladly do so. The problem is, we cannot even do so. And this is something the government, with their million-dollar salary, needs to understand. If the only way for the government to understand, is for us to pay them median wages like we earn, then maybe we should do that.
