I find myself interested in politics only out of necessity. I find the general notion of a giant social structure dictating rules based off what it assumes is best for the whole of society as vulgar. In past human history the role of taking care of the disadvantage and needy fell upon the family and the tribe but now we are essentially on gigantic tribe and our collective needs are tremendous: more than any government can handle. The problem is, as the government offers more people rely on each other less and the transformation from the collectivist mentality of antiquity to the individualism that dominates today has taken its roll on us. I dont support socialism because I dont think it works as it reduces the incentive to grow and produce. But I do believe in a return to collectivism coupled with minimalism. If you want the welfare system to go away we need to start supporting our neighbors and community. This doesnt need to be financial support but the intangible things like taking time out of your schedule to teach someone a skill or even mentor somebody. If you look out on the masses and see a lack of applicable knowledge and skills like I do, do something about it. Help someone find their passion and you help create someone who benefits the system rather than leeches off it. And we need to consume less as a whole. This isnt complicated, we are consuming more resources than is sustainable and the pathological pursuit of wealth without purpose leads to both unhappy people and a large wealth gap. Im not anti-capitalism by any means but I am opposed to the concept of growth at any cost because at some point it will screw us hard. Ultimately, we need a philosophical shift in the way we think before we can expect sweeping political changes. Our government is jacked up because WE as a society are jacked up. So we can complain about our government all we want but until we change no fundamental shift will occur. Power will just continue to transfer from one asshole to another slightly different asshole. We will continue to over consume and eat up precious resources. We will continue to live unfulfilled lives and the average person will continue to become more and more powerless. This is not meant to be depressing, but rather a wake up call.
