I find myself put off by the litmus tests that seek to put people - TopicsExpress

I find myself put off by the litmus tests that seek to put people into categories of conservative or liberal/progressive based on a laundry list of prescribed policy positions, and deviation from the list, even one item on the list, makes one a heretic. It makes me wonder if we ever take the time to consider the foundations of our beliefs. For me, being conservative has nothing to do with identifying myself with a particular political party or politician(s), or with a particular policy stance. If I take a position on an issue, its because it is consistent with my fundamental worldview, from which all else emanates. What do you believe about God, man, the universe and our place in it? Through what lens do you watch, interpret and act within the world we live in? This is one of my favorite articles because Lou Markos eschews the political talking points and gets to the essentials. Im sure there are some who will find his advice to his son incomplete because he doesnt tell him what a conservative should believe when it comes to current events or the issues of the day. I believe, however, that the best advice is to figure out first what you believe about the world, and think and act for yourself based on those beliefs. You dont need a script from an external source to dictate your beliefs to you. Incidentally, this is one of a series of blog articles Lou Markos writes to his son upon his matriculation to college. Check out all 15 Advice to My Son columns at civitate.org/tag/advice-to-my-son/page/3/ - you may find something you can use for your child, or maybe youll be stirred by what you read.
