I find the opposition comments in this article interesting. Bringing a motion to a Full Meeting of the Town Council for public consideration and debate is not at the drop of a hat. Its an idea, to be considered, and then approved or rejected after that consideration. Neither is it at the last minute. Its May. Christmas is in December. And Full Council could as easily decide to do it, but to delay it a year, or two years, if they thought that appropriate. You have to start talking about an idea at SOME point, or it never gets talked about. They say it should be part of a fundraising drive. Of course, nobody said otherwise. Theres no reason why it shouldnt run alongside a fundraising drive - so much the better. They talk about the various problems in the town and how we could spend the money in other ways and they are right, we could. But this will always be the case. So by this argument we will never spend anything on our Christmas Lights. Trouble is, the same people are constantly calling for local Councils to spend money on this and that and rarely mention how tough times are when the issue they want money spent on is their personal brainchild. The fact is that weve been saying it costs a lot and we have to think about this carefully year after year. And year after year people tell us they arent happy with the Christmas Lights. Were there to represent the views of the people and so its entirely appropriate to make this suggestion, because people have asked us to do so. If the Town Council says No, thats cool. Whatever. As least well have considered it and debated it publicly and people can see that is the case.
