Let me just say that the Pearl Foundations annual costs have NEVER exceeded $1500.00. 100% of Paypal payments for goods on my website goes to the Foundation. 100% of the tip jar at shows. No one gets a salary, and when I do a Pearl benefit, 100% of the take goes to the Foundation. pearlfoundation/ When my new business manager met with Pat and me for the first time, he asked Where does the money from the Foundation go? And I, naively, answered It goes to fund college scholarships for returning students. He looked at me again and said No, where does the rest of it go? I was stumped. What do you mean, the rest? There is no rest. It goes to fund scholarships. He looked at my wife Pat (the lawyer), who laughed and said She doesnt even think like that. It all goes to scholarships. i say this not because Im so swell, but because it never occurred to me that someone would form a charitable organization to shelter their money from taxes, then pay themselves to work with it. Not to mention providing a living for their family and hangers-on. I have fans who donate monthly, every single month, from $1.00 on up. I find it incredibly moving, every single time Im notified of a donation - of any size. I have people who hand me money in the street, asking that it be donated for scholarships. I joke after shows that the left hand pocket is for Pearl, because I put money people hand me in that pocket. But it all gets accounted, and it all gets deposited, and at the end of the year, all but a minor amount gets donated. How the hell can these people live with themselves? When we hold our annual website sale (coming up in January!!!), 100% of whats raised in that period goes to the Foundation. I pick up the postage, Pat and I do the packing and fulfillment. Its a lot of work, but as of January 2015 well have spent more than $800,000 endowing scholarships at Goddard College VT, Berea College KY, Warren Wilson NC, and UT Knoxville. We are extremely proud of our track record, and want everyone out there to know that not all of us are thieves. Yes, you heard me. I think people who behave in this manner are thieves, convincing donors theyre doing good, while lining their pockets. But karma will out, there will be a reckoning. I dont doubt it for a second.
