I fine and pleasant film. Piggy backs off of films like Good Will Hunting (but not as dynamic, interesting or entertaining), A Beautiful Mind, My Left Foot and 1968s Charly with Cliff Robertson. It isnt nearly as strong a film as any of the previously mentioned (except for maybe Charly which is rather dated). Eddie Redmayne is not nearly as interesting as any of the aforementioned performances but that is not to say he wasnt fantastic... there is no shame in not being Daniel Day Lewis, Russell Crowe or even Matt Damon. The writing here lacked as well, trying poorly to illustrate a much larger argument of god vs. science with a weak love conquers even the hardest obstacles parallel. I think my biggest issue with the film is that for a movie about someone trying to discover a Theory behind EVERYTHING-- there was very little exploration of everything in it. Films like 127 Hours and Life of Pi explore this aspect much more intriguingly. Right along with this point Stephen Hawking is one of the most amazing men living in our time, its truly unfortunate that the movie about his life wasnt up to par. Overall its a weak year for film and this crowd pleaser is lucky for it. It deserved the scoring nod which expertly lubricated my emotions for possible tear jerking. The performances were very solid and easily the most redeeming aspect of the film. Felicity Jones did a fantastic job playing a extraordinary woman watching her genius man go through something terrible... however I dont see her being rewarded beyond the nomination. Redmayne did a wonderful job throughout and definitely has the most attention grabbing role (by this I mean playing a real life person with ALS... a given thats going to constantly influence his physical and vocal choices) of the Oscar contenders this year. I still have to see Cooper in American Sniper and Cumberbatch in Imitation Game before I can make an informed decision in the Actor race. The writing didnt deserve an adaptation nomination... at least based on the writing within the film... in fairness I havent read the book. If this wins best picture (which I dont think it will) Ill be disappointed. A fine film but my goodness not Best Picture caliber.
