I finished reading this book on Monday, and it will join my small shelf of nonfiction titles that I know Ill revisit frequently for the rest of my life — books like Chestertons ORTHODOXY, Thomas Mertons journals, Annie Dillards PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK and FOR THE TIME BEING, Madeleine LEngles books on story and imagination, Flannery OConnors reflections on faith and art, and poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins and Scott Cairns... writing that doesnt just renew my faith but breaks the forms and the vocabulary of my faith open again so that it can grow. In other words, books of holy hurt.
