I finished writing a piece of correspondence. I placed it into the envelope and sealed it. I reached for a sheet of stamps -- New England Lighthouses, Sixth in a Series -- the first sheet of stamps I ever personally bought. I reached for the first stamp on this sheet, and as I was peeling it I realized -- each of the stamps on this sheet is unique. It depicts a particular lighthouse. If I choose a particular stamp, I will not have a stamp corresponding to that particular lighthouse. Can I choose a particular lighthouse to best correspond to the content of the letter? And for the first time in my life, I came to understand philately.
