I first had this idea at about the age of ten. I vividly remember the idea dawning on me over time, growing within me and presenting to my young mind the single greatest argument against immortality - but there was no word for it. Thank you, Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. For me I guess it was the beginning of my realisation that a life well lived was resigned to its infinitesimal nature. It was when I mentally started to die - no matter how much I tried i would always be excessively minute and irrelevant. But at that tender and frightening moment I think I also started to live. This is it. Make it count. Not for my part in totality or the universe - but for me and for you and those around us who by exceptional happenstance have to share a flash of consciousness in an ocean of blackness and non-meaning.
