I first heard Beyond the Fringe — the satirical revue by Dudley - TopicsExpress

I first heard Beyond the Fringe — the satirical revue by Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller — back in the mid-‘60s when I checked out an LP from the Ashland public library. Okay, Pamela pretty much hates these guys (“it must be a ‘guy thing,’” she says), but I love this stuff. I think Monty Python, Fireside Theater, Radio Dinner, later Capitol Steps and every Christopher Guest movie owe a huge shout-out to Beyond the Fringe, which was way ahead of its time. Well, today I found that this video of the group’s entire two-hour final performance (in ’63 or ’64) is available on YouTube. I suppose Pamela is right (as usual) that it IS for mad men only. Some of the material is pretty dated; other gags are a bit obscure for us non-Brits. But for those patient enough to dig in, there are some real comic gems that will remind you of John Cleese and company. And it’s a pretty interesting view of pre-Beatles Britain. https://youtube/watch?v=KUd1OxPbKk4
