I first met Don at McDonalds at two oclock in the morning. I just came from a hospital visiting a patient. He was sitting eyes closed for a long time. Curious, I sat in front of him and found out he was asleep. Before I could leave, he woke up and we chatted for a while. He have been sleeping in McDonalds for several days waiting for his pension check to clear. I took him home and he stayed with me for several days sleeping on my couch, again sitting up straight. He made our place more lively and interesting that week. He had stories and jokes to tell. He made a cross cut out from a piece of paper that also spelled Hell . He joined our BIble studies and shared his thoughts and faith. He seemed penitent and contrite. Honest and sincere. After that, Don came back several times, even attended our worship service in Mactan. I have not seen Don for quite a while. I stopped by Danao several times on my way to Arapal, but did not connect. We stayed in touch via text and occasional Facebook chats. He seems to be a nice and decent man trying to live the last days of his life in peace. He must have done bad things to his family in the US for them to disown him all the way to the grave. I will not judge them or Don. But Don did not do me or any of my people wrong. I sensed that he wanted to die in the Philippines. May he rest in peace.
