I first visited the Mall of America (my old boyfriend and I used to refer to it as a the Maul of America) on the day it opened, the day after Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday). It was an overwhelming and depressing experience because for all the profligate retail abbodanza, it was sterile and gross and we wound up not buying a thing. Kids, I love to shop. Its not like I dont enjoy shopping! But there was something about the MOA that crushed both of us, as we walked around hand in hand, giggling at things and eventually riding the Snoopy rollercoaster in the middle of the whole place. Yea, theres a rollercoaster in there. We had dinner and got lost on the way to the car, and then couldnt find the car. I lived in Minnesota for two years and was astonished by its incredible whiteness. I worked for a time at the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center in the bad part of town which was really just the black part of town. I am not surprised by the ridiculous over-reaction of the Mall of America managers who felt it necessary to close the stores because of a peaceful protest there last week. Now theyre trying to sue the folks who organized the protest for the crime of causing white people to feel uncomfortable while they spend money. Thats how I see it. There were several thousand protesters, almost all white. Guess who got arrested? People of color. Go tell it on the mountain.
