I first watched the Popes awe-inspiring address to the EU in italian and (despite my poor mastery of the language) managed to break into tears half way through. Technology and consumerism have deafened us to our innate sensitivity to the human condition. The Popes encouraging message urges us to pull together and restore human dignity in a continent where our selfish and divisive ideals encourage us to turn disadvantaged people into disposable objects once they have been deemed useless. Our current greed and opulence is not sustainable. It is unacceptable that so many people are going to sleep hungry every night when so much food is thrown away from our tables. We must promote inclusion for poor migrants who have become ostracised, disillusioned and lonely. We must provide for ambitious youth who are looking for good education and fair employment opportunities. As a continent, we must put in place a unified immigration policy to avoid the Mediterranean becoming a mass graveyard for the thousands of poor migrants who die crossing it, desperate to escape their situations of poverty, genocide, oppression and religious fanatism. The belief that we must further close our borders and protect what is ours, is fueled by thoughts of scarcity, fear and ingratitude. There IS enough. Not for everyones greed, but for everyones need. https://youtube/watch?v=cqP2DB2isZ0
