The combination of strong Western colonial influences on a truly Asian city, and the exotic location created a place of infinite curiosity for me. The stunning juxtaposition of the gleaming financial buildings, the fact that it was an international crossroads for commerce and shipping, and the buzzing of the Asian community and culture that was the backbone of the city had an almost intoxicating effect on me.
