I found a few interesting bits of news in the paper the other day and I thought that I would share some of them with you. The first one comes to us from the Pittsburgh area. The lawyer for a man accused of killing a Pittsburgh police dog is telling jurors not to believe the police officers testimony just because they wear badges. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that testimony began Tuesday in the case of John Rush, charged with stabbing to death Rocco during an arrest in January. He faces charges that include abusing a police animal, disarming a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault. Rush’s lawyer argues there’s some reasonable doubt about at least some of the charges and is raising questions about whether Rush intended to hurt the dog or was just responding to being attacked by the animal. Now I don’t know because I have never been arrested for anything, but I am pretty sure that the officer had to have told him to stop and surrender because he was under arrest. The fact that he not only stabbed the dog to death and then disarmed the officer leaves no doubt in my mind as to his culpability in the matter, no matter what the original complaint was.
