I found this article this morning - Fuel is cheaper—so lets hike gas tax: Former governor - cnbc/id/102241157 - and I think there is some merit in the argument that our infrastructure needs to be renewed. Then I clicked another link to drill down in the story - eia.gov/petroleum/marketing/monthly/pdf/mgt.pdf - I did not realize Pennsylvania has one of the highest, if not the highest, state fuel tax in the country. The average State Fuel Tax in the US on Motor Gasoline is 24.17 cents/gallon and 24.70 cents/gallon on Diesel. Pennsylvania charges 41.80 cents/gallon and 52.10 cents/gallon on Motor Gasoline and Diesel respectively. That is on top of federal taxes, I believe, and the footnotes indicate other states have other taxes tied to fuel. So I suspect most people in Pennsylvania are already contributing between $10 and $50 per week to the infrastructure in current State and Federal taxes. Then add another couple bucks for tolls on the turnpike for those of us along the NE Extension. So I guess my question is what is enough? I dont mind reasonable taxes for real services provided. This is not something I have a firm belief one way or the other but I do feel we are being asked to pay for things and our government just says ... Pay us ... keep going ... well tell you when it is enough. Just a thought I had this morning sparked by this article.
