I found this series on youtube called Black in Latin America that Ive been into. There are 4 episodes and I havent seen them all yet, but they seem rad so far. 1) Haiti/ Dominican Republic 2) Cuba 3) Mexico & Peru 4) Brazil Its interesting learning about the concept of race in other countries, the way we see it in the US is not how it exists in so much of the world. People in the US dont seem to realize the Brazil had 10x as many slaves brought to their country, or that even little Cuba and Hispanola had more African slaves brought to them than the USA. In places like Brazil the original Portuguese settlers rarely brought wives with them and as a result you see so much more racial diversity with European Paternal DNA and African and Native Maternal DNA. So in the US we may think of someone whos 1/4 African descent as being black, when in many of these countries they would be considered White. Withing the Mestizo population the same thing holds true, in America many people would regard someone has being Hispanic or Latino, when neither of those are races and latinos can have a whole range of origins ranging from Japanese, African, European, etc. Long story short, racism is stupid and the idea of race in general is so subjective and pretty unnecessary. Also, Its good to learn about other cultures so you can broaden your views and start to think differently... the more you know, the more asinine concepts like race, nationalism, oppression, etc. are.
