I found this stone while digging in my backyard in Beach Grove a - TopicsExpress

I found this stone while digging in my backyard in Beach Grove a number of years ago. It is called an ATLATL weight. This stone was attached to either to a spear or throwing board. Atlatl predate the use of bows and arrows. They were used for hunting and warfare. You will notice a hole has been drilled. This drilling must have taken many days to accomplish. The hole was used to fasten to the spear or board. They were used here in the Delta around 1700 to 2000 years ago. My hypothesis is the hunter lived where the middens are at 16 ave and 56 street and headed east towards the beach. At that time Beach Grove would have been a shallow sea possibly with lots of native grasses growing tall. He probably threw the spear at a duck and the weight came off and was lost. Google Royal BC Museum to see other examples. Ill bet he caught sh_t when he got home and had to tell his wife he lost the family hunting rock somewhere in Beach Grove. It is kind of neat to know someone from that long ago was in my backyard.
