I found two items of interest in this article: Inmate telephone revenue is down by about $150,000, Simms said, and property taxes are down about $100,000. First, I find it somewhat unsettling to learn INMATE telephone revenues being down has any impact on the countys finances and perhaps equally troubling to learn inmate revenues are down one hundred fifty-thousand dollars. Do we really have that many people in county jail? But of personal interest to me: and property taxes are down about $100,000 - DOWN REALLY? We received an appraisal declaring our property taxes were INCREASING this year as a result of increase valuation. To retrace an earlier post, property values in the Gadsden Metro have DECREASED by more than eight percent since 2009 according to ACRE (Alabama Center for Real Estate). Do any of you recall a decrease in valuation since 2009? As I previously suggested, Ms. Barrett-Vaughan has perhaps found a means of increasing ad valorem taxes by an arbitrary increase in property values. Or given that property taxes are down, did only a few experience INCREASES in property taxes for the upcoming year? I thought everything was rosy in Etowah County. How could property taxes have gone down is such a booming economic era?
