I generally dont like horror movies. Im pretty sensitive to that kind of stuff. But I felt compelled to watch The Babadook as soon as I read about it. I just watched it, early this morning, in a dark, empty house. Wow. The horror movies I DO like are psychological, like The Shining. They have heart and brains (not the kind you see spilled onto the floor). The Babadook fits the bill. Its an effective horror film, but also an effective film about grief, mental illness, and social isolation. And I found that the ending sent a poignant, subtle message about coping with these things. Its well-acted and stylishly done on a low budget (it was partially funded with Kickstarter).
